Being my own boss...

Well, I've made it to the first anniversary of my business. It's certainly been a roller coaster

with plenty of ups and downs and a couple of surprises thrown in for good measure.

Being self employed may have plenty of perks but it seems many people think you can do literally what you like when you like... if only!

I'm lucky for sure, compared to my '9 til 5' job I certainly have greater flexibility. I can grab that cuppa pretty much whenever I like or nip out for a few hours without having to fill forms, but the problem is it all rests squarely on my shoulders, no one else to turn to for backup. I'm chief everything: design, production, marketing, packing, sales, accounts etc

and then of you have the added pressure of the extremely sporadic, often non existent pay cheque! All this can be very disheartening especially when you've poured your heart and soul into something. Getting spotted amongst the big boys can leave you feeling like a teeny tiny fish, in an enormous ocean... but when you do land that sale, that magazine article, mention on Facebook, great review, the feeling of accomplishment is unparalleled because you know it was all ultimately down to you.

So being self employed is certainly not for the faint-hearted. You need to be tough, prepared for knock-backs, flexible and creative but if you're prepared to jump on the ride, when you hit that loop and come flying back out the other side the feeling is amazing. So here's to stepping straight back on that 'coaster and working towards a future created by me... for me. Here's to another year of self employment!
